Topic: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Hi...
Another Topic :
Would be possible to merge the functions of "color balance" into "color
mapper" ?

Some of the times I have to go back and forth between
"color balance options" and "color Mapper"...
Most of the time I use the "color mapper" histogram grid to help me making the correct color
adjustments... smile

In the most recent versions I can see both "histogram and curves" adjustments in
"color balance" option but they are too awkward to be usable ... sad

Would it be possible to "colorify" the histogram in "color mapper" option ?

I also can see some "method"s but I have no idea of the implications ... sad
I have "learn" to use some of them but others are still an incognito to me ...

Nonetheless some help (with some tooltips ) would be nice regarding the different "methods"
available in "color balance".

Resuming :
would be possible to select and edit other colorspaces besides R G B in the "color
mapper" interface ?

Of course I do not know if some of the other operations or selections like "gamma" are applyable in some of the the other colorspaces ...

Another issue :
I know that I already asked about this in the past :
would Image analyser in the future be able to read 48 bit images and work in 16 bits per
channel ?

Thanks for the pacience and the best freeware image program

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

I am currently working on integrating more of the functionality of the color mapper dialog into the color balance. Hopefully I will be able to merge them, but it requires a lot of work and I'm still not sure how to make a logical user interface with all the functionality (well, not the the current color mapper dialog is particular user friendly wink).

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

If you download the latest beta now you will get most of the old Color mapper functionality in the Color balance dialog (I'm still missing a few things). Please help me test it...

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Hi ...
Thanks for the fast update ... smile
I have downloaded the lastest beta version and
started testing the new color balance funtionality ...
Now with the new (bigger) interface we do have much more color control ...
As soon as I get some more time I will give more details over this thread ... smile
Thanks again ...

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Well, your suggestion came at a good time because I was working on some improvements for the color balance dialog anyway so I might as well take in some more of the functionality from the color mapper.

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Hi...
After some tests here are some of my findings....

Missed the negative values in regarding the Exposure (most of the times helping to pin point the correct "black point") ...

Missing the Apply button for multiple corrections ...
Although I do noticed that the last colorpace and correspondent settings are kept...

No some other new ideas :

"Preset Curve Mode" instead of "Preset curves"  would be more intuitive .... smile

In the combo box some adjust might be welcome:

A separator (dashses or similar) in order to show the differences between

Exposure / Brightness & Constrast and (Shadow/ midtones  / highlights)

...

A tooltip would be nice regarding some info about the options in the combo box.

Something like :

Exposure:       well self explanatory,  nothing to say ...
Brightness and contrast :  self explanatory ...

Shadow: moving the curve only in the 1/4 quarter of the histogram
Mid tone : moving  middle of curve  2/4 and 3/4
Highlight: moving the curve only in th 1/4 quarter

Scale: changing the higher point only.
Add: shift the curve left and right, both low point and high point ...
Gamma: rounding the curve as spline smile

Treshold: a point of intersect the curve
Histogram equal: self explanatory ...
Quantizer: self explanatory ...

Wb min : could not figure it out yet ... sad

an so on .... smile

Thanks fo the support ...

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

The beta download has been updated with an Apply button in the color balance form and a few more changes.
Unfortunately i don't know how to make popup hints in a drop down box..

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Hi ...
After some testing with the latest beta version
everything works Ok ...
But it seems awkward to select Brightness / Contrast / Exposure mixed up in the same Combo-Box...
and seing the sliders simply changing the "title" ...

Idea:
Making 2 mutual exclusive combo Boxs...
If one of them is active the other one is inactive ...
So would be easier to understand why the sliders change... smile

Another idea  would be indenting the Text differently inside the combo box
in order to know which action accesses the different sliders...

Another funny action that recently tested is the "histogram equalization" in different colour spaces besides RGB ...
But while in others options we have 3 tick boxes below the colorspace and the ability to disable the "correction" action in a specific channel or not ...
In "histogram equal" those tick boxes disappear ... sad
Sometimes I do need to "histogram equalize" a specific channel like "L" in LAB mode ...
I do put the others "channels" with 0 value in order to disable them , is there any other option ?

Most of the time I use the "Histogram Equal mode" in order to make an idea of the silhoutete of the correct curve to apply in "User Defined mode" ...

What is the expression used in the "Histogramm Equal mode" or can not it be recreated in the manual expression mode ? smile

Changing subject : Does the TIFF import filter handles 16 bit depth single channel TIFFs ?

Thanks for the support

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

I don't really understand your point about the sliders changing or how it should work with two comboboxes. It has always been as it is now. Of cause it could be solved by putting all the sliders on the same page, but I would prefer to limit it to 3 at a time.

In "histogram equal" those tick boxes disappear

For some of the curve modes there is a slider for each color plane and for others the sliders affect the selected planes, and the tickboxes are only visible in the later case. So for histogram equalization the way to disable it is to move the slider to zero. I agree that this might not be very logical so I will consider changing it.

What is the expression used in the "Histogramm Equal mode"

If you go to Expression mode and click the arrow on the right side of the expression you will get a drop down, and the second expression is histogram equalization. (:s=s*(x>0)+hx; s/count)

Does the TIFF import filter handles 16 bit depth single channel TIFFs

Probably, but actually I don't actually remember. Try...

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

Hi ...
After some more image testing and using the latest beta version and
still regarding the new color balance interface ...
I do have a small comment to make:

After "disabling" the buttons on top right side regarding the colorspace
would it be possible to show in the histogram "Only" the selected channel ...?

Pratical Example:
in RGB colorspace I only need to edit the Green so I disable (Red and Blue)
but in the histogram display I still have the 3 histograms ... smile

Despite being displayed with the correct color ,
sometimes it would be easier to edit a specific  tone with only one channel displayed...

Thanks in advance

Re: Color balance interface vs color mapper interface

I have just made two small updates -
* In RGB mode it only shows the selected color planes
* If you have a rectangular selection when opening the dialog then the histogram will be computed for the selected area only
