Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Hello,
3 Months is a long period of time ;-).
Like i showed with this samples, the 3x image magnification works on uncompressed images really good there is nothing better*method as the fractal magnification in IA (*i cant find supersampling* as a downloadable programm to test it)

I worked with adams images to test the different methods.
IA fractal resizing algorithms at 3x scaling
vs. onOne Genuine Fractals 6 Pro as "The industry standard for image resizing"=159eur and
vs. BenVista PhotoZoom Pro 4 with "patented S-Spline Technology"=169eur

the original by adam:

here are the results 3X (but crops to save calcuation time and upload space):

BenVista PhotoZoom Pro 4 (Spline XL):

onOne Genuine Fractals 6 Pro (high details preset):

Image Analyzer fractal5squared (x3 region=14 regul=0,0001 filter=4 clampw=0 normalize=0 clampres=0)
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3413/fractal51x3region14regu.png

Image Analyzer fractal9squared (x3 region=14 regul=0,00000061 filter=4 clampw=0 normalize=0 clampres=1):
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8004/fractal91x3region14regu.png

the halos on the last 2 images are only a light distorsion from the JPEG algorithm.
If the source if uncompressed the dont show up.
My opnion is the 2 commercial products aren't worth the price.
They look like a slightly improved lanczos (i compared them), only the contrast was a bit higher,
only the Image Analyzer fracals could make small details visible (ompare the lines on the tree!)

it would be nice if adam could post his used parameters for the posted images

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

So, why IA not have a Fractal 14 Square Method, or it may not give results better than Fractal 9 Square Method?

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

The numbers refer to the neighborhood around each pixel used to synthesize the higher resolution, so 5 is

9 is a 3x3 box and 25 is a 5x5 box.
I'm not sure what 14 would be  smile

Michael, did you read this? (Wiener filter for single image SR) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60527527/icip2006.pdf

Thanks, I will have a look and see if I understand it...

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

I tried to read the paper, but I must admit that I didn't fully understand it. Their method is a bit more general as it can handle any scale factor whereas mine and that of Xin Li (NEDI) can only scale to double size so to scale more it is necessary to run it multiple times.
It would be nice to be able to do a comparison, but unfortunately it is hard to extract their source image from the paper because the PDF generation seems to have introduced serious JPG artifacts.

I have made comparsion: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60527527/Compar … ethods.zip
Your Fractal Interpolation stil give best results.

It's looks interest, here described Wavelet Discrete Transform for image interpolation: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60527527/Discre … lation.pdf

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Hi there again! I have to say that Image Analyzer helped me a lot when I did my diploma work. Thank you for such a great interpolation it helped me to enlarge some picture from the web! smile

By the way, can you take a look on this? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/605 … interp.zip

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Hi
I have seen some quite impressive results with wavelet based image scaling, but it has been a long time since I worked with this.
Did you try any of the algorithms in the ZIP? Unfortunately I don't have access to Matlab any more so I can't easily run them.

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Could anyone shed a light on those Fractal methods?
What's the algorithm?
How does they work?

Is there a reference MATLAB implementation?

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

They are variations of the idea behind the NEDI algorithm -

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Looks interesting.
Has anyone created MATLAB implemtation?

Re: About upgrade of fractal interpolation plugin

Moreover, why are they called "Fractal Based?

Anyone here?
